Polish Nurses in Germany: Earn 3x More with EU Free Movement

The opportunity: PLN 5,500 vs EUR 3,500-4,500 per month

Polish registered nurses earn a median salary of approximately PLN 5,500 per month (around EUR 1,250). In Germany, the same role pays EUR 3,500 to 4,500 per month, with ICU and specialty nurses earning even more. That is a 2.5 to 3 times salary increase for the same clinical skills.

The gap is not just about base pay. German employers commonly offer shift premiums for nights and weekends (adding EUR 3,000 to 8,000 per year), structured career progression pathways, pension contributions, and in many cases relocation support and subsidized housing.

EU free movement: no visa, no work permit

As a Polish citizen and EU member since 2004, you have the right to live and work anywhere in the European Union without a visa or work permit. This applies to your spouse and dependent children as well.

Unlike nurses from the Philippines or Tunisia who face a 10 to 14 month visa and recognition process, Polish nurses can complete the entire process in 3 to 6 months.

Automatic diploma recognition under EU Directive 2005/36/EC

Polish nursing degrees earned after 2004 (when Poland joined the EU) are automatically recognized across the EU under Directive 2005/36/EC. This means:

  • No equivalency exam (Kenntnisprufung) required
  • No supervised adaptation period in most cases
  • Recognition processing typically takes 1 to 3 months
  • Your employer handles most of the paperwork

Nurses who graduated before 2004 may need to complete a short adaptation process, but even this is far simpler than the non-EU pathway.
